Looking Back, Thinking Forward: Women and Mental Health

August 20 @ 5:30 pm 7:00 pm

Join Peg’s in person or online for a community conversation inspired by art, history, and lived experience as we explore how our understanding of mental illness—particularly among women—has evolved over time and what these histories can teach us about mental health today.

Inspired by Kimberly Chapman’s exhibit, Eighty-Six Reasons for Asylum Admission: A Domestic Beginning, this community conversation brings together perspectives from art, psychiatry, and historical research to explore how cultural beliefs and institutional practices have shaped mental health care—and how those histories continue to influence us today.

At Peg’s, we believe art can spark meaningful conversations that deepen understanding, challenge assumptions, and strengthen our communities. This exhibit serves as the catalyst for an open dialogue that invites participants to listen, reflect, and engage with diverse perspectives on mental health, history, and healing.

Guests are encouraged to visit the exhibit at the Baldwin Buss Merino House before the program to experience Chapman’s powerful work firsthand. The gallery will offer special hours from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on the day of the event, providing an opportunity to reflect on the artwork before joining the conversation.

Panelists Kimberly Chapman, MA, BFA, Jennifer Bazar, Ph.D., and Douglas Smith, M.D., DLFAPA will share perspectives that encourage thoughtful dialogue about women’s mental health, dignity, recovery, advocacy, research, and community care. The conversation will be moderated by Jonas Thom, MA, PCC, creating space to honor diverse viewpoints and prioritize listening as much as speaking.

Grounded in history while connected to today’s mental health challenges, this event invites attendees to be part of the conversation. Together, we’ll explore the intersections of mental health, gender, storytelling, and social change, while considering how listening to one another and learning from the past can inspire greater understanding, compassion, and continued dialogue within our community.

The Listening Path: A 6-Week Artist's Way Program

Spaces are limited. Registration is required. For anyone seeking to reclaim, reconnect with, or deepen their attention to their creative inner world—artists and non-artists alike. This 6-week program offers a shared space to explore creativity, attention, and listening through individual practice and group reflection. The Listening Path: The Creative Art of Attention by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, provides the framework for our gatherings, which will include reading, small-cluster sharing, and creative practices. Participants should obtain their own copy of The Listening Path: The Creative Art of Attention and read the Introduction and Week One chapters before the first meeting on Friday, October 9. Because the program builds from week to week, participants are encouraged to review all dates carefully before registering and to plan for consistent attendance. What to Expect: Each week will include reading, guided activities, and independent creative practices, such as Morning Pages, Artist Dates, and Walks—or another accessible form of mindful movement or sensory attunement. The process is private and personal, emphasizing growth through lived experience rather than critique or feedback. Time for group sharing will offer an opportunity to reflect on the experience and connect with others along the way. In-Person Program Dates: Friday, October 9 | 5:00–6:30 PM Friday, October 16 | 5:00–6:30 PM Friday, October 23 | 5:00–6:30 PM Friday, October 30 | 5:00–6:30 PM Friday, November 6 | 5:00–6:30 PM Friday, November 13 | 5:00–6:30 PM About the Facilitator: Laura Naples is an artist based in Hudson, Ohio. Her work explores subtle energies across the natural world and human-made forms, tracing how they are sensed and communicated through gestural abstractions. Drawing on design, dance, and calligraphy, she works with diluted acrylic washes, allowing water and gravity to flow into gradient textures. Acts of surrender and intention emerge as evidential markers of her meditative inquiry.
